First scientifically accurate reference of meditation is found in GITA, one of the early hindu treatise on philosophy of KARMA, it dates back more than two thousand years. Till two hundred years ago, meditation was shrouded in mysticism, religion and unnecessary rituals, smothering the true spirit (and benefits) of meditation.
Swamy Vivekanand introduced meditation to the western world in Chicago Conference of Religion. West became seriously interested in meditation in 1950s with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's 'Transcendental Meditation (TM)'.
It is to the credit of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi that meditation became popular in its scientific (structures) form cutting across the boundaries of faith, religion and superstition. He encouraged scientific studies on meditation which convinced scientists and healthcare professionals regarding its unique health enhancing benefits.
In 1990's, Americans celebrated the 'Decade of the Brain' and pumped millions of dollars on brain research which again facilitated recognition of remarkable beneficial effects of meditation at physical, mental, social and spiritual levels. Brain research also defined the technique of meditation making it a structured process which can be learned by almost every body. Research also removed uncertainty about attaining meditative state. Now, you can go into true meditation state without fail every time you intend to meditate, right from the day one !
